INCF Japan-Node Newsletter No.13 Aug. 2010 (NIJC at RIKEN-BSI)

1) RAST (Related Abstract Search tool) is now available

* Neuroinformatics 2010 RAST
http://ras.ni.brain.riken.jp/neuroinformatics2010/

* Neuro 2010 RAST (mutually linked with MySchedule)
http://ras.ni.brain.riken.jp/neuro2010/

The RAST allows you to search not only by providing keyword(s),
but also by selecting one or multiple abstracts to search for its
related abstracts. This feature may provide results focused on
the user's interest. That is, abstracts related to a single abstract
by means of document similarity may belong to a different research topic.
However, abstracts mutually similar to multiple selected abstracts have
higher chance in belonging to the similar topic. RAST also suggests
possible candidates of keywords by automatically extracting major words
from the list of related abstracts. You can also use these words to
refine your search. Moreover, not all related abstracts will contain
the provided keyword(s). These abstracts cannot be searched by the
ordinary keyword search, and thus we call them "Hidden treasure".
You can create a list by clicking on Add to Cart button at each abstract,
where abstracts will be sorted by date and time. You can also print
the list with or without the abstract body from your Printing Cart.
You can restore your "Printing Cart" by saving the ID which is
displayed on the top right corner.
Try and find your "hidden treasures" with RAST! (A quick guide is shown
on the top page, and a detailed guide can be accessed by clicking on
"How to use").

* Abstract Book of "Neuroinformatics2010" is available on the web.
You'll get a data CD of abstracts (not a book form) at the reception desk
on site. So we recommend printing it beforehand.

* INCF Co-hosting Symposium(S1-1-1) on Sep.2nd
"Hierarchical data-oriented neuroscience"
Data-oriented neuroscience is a novel research field which attempts
to integrate high-throughput measurement data at different levels of
neural systems, from molecules to behaviors, to create databases, to
discover new knowledge, and to construct quantitative models.
In this symposium, we discuss possible future directions of
data-oriented neuroscience with invited talks by leading researchers
engaged on developments of large-scale neural databases and
multi-scale models.
Date & Time: September 2, 2010, 8:30-11:00
Venue: Room 1
Chair: Shiro Usui (RIKEN BSI)
Tadashi Isa (Department of Developmental Physiology, NIPS)
Program:
Allan R Jones (Allen Institute for Brain Science)
"Mapping Gene Expression in the CNS: Tools and Data from the
Allen Institute for Brain Science"
Rodney J Douglas (Institute of Neuroinformatics, Univ. Zurich)
"Some Computational Principles derived from Cortical Neuroanatomy"
Sten Grillner (INCF, Karolinska Institute)
"The Computational Logics of Networks in Motion - from Ion
Channels to Behavior"
Gary F Egan (Florey Neuroscience Institute, Univ. Melbourne)
"Multi-modal brain imaging for investigating and modeling
neurological diseases"

* INCF Japan-Node will give demonstrations at Neuro2010
Exhibition booth of INCF Japan-Node is opening during Neuro2010.

4) Registration Open for Digital Atlasing Workshop on Sep.2nd

http://incf.org/about/news/registration-open-for-digital-atlasing-workshop/newsitem_view

The day-long Workshop will be held Sept. 2 at the Portopia Hotel and is
open to everyone. Progress of the program towards interoperability
between diverse atlasing efforts will be featured, including Waxholm Space
(WHS) as a spatial standard for the mouse brain and INCF Digital Atlasing
Infrastructure (DAI) which supports this interoperability. Highlights
include demonstrations and hands-on activities with software tools,
transformation services, standards development, and information about how
others might take advantage of this framework. Limited spots are available.
To register, please email
DA-Workshop@incf.org.
